KITS SHOWBOAT SHOW ORDER

O Canada

As Winds Dance

As Winds Dance is a joyful piece all about syncopation.  There is a central rhythmic pattern repeated throughout the piece that cycles through all of the instruments. As you listen, think about the wind dancing through trees on a Sunny Spring day, with birds flying in and out of the branches, and you will have captured the essence of “As Winds Dance”

Anjin: The Blue Eyed Samurai

Anjin is all about the journey of a warrior:  It opens with a beautiful, reverant theme (play theme), which transforms later on into a more heroic theme.

In the middle of this warrior’s journey, our hero thinks wistfully of home and this is represented by the English folk song “The Water is Wide” (play theme).  This folk song is all about longing for home.  This cinematic piece features Ian on Flute, Iulia on Oboe, and Frank on the Euphonium.

Fireworks Music

The Fireworks suite was premeired by Handel on April 29, 1749, to to commemorate the end of the War of Austrian Succession.  It was originally scored an ensemble of twenty-four oboes, twelve bassoons, contrabassoon, nine horns, nine trumpets, and timpani in order to be heard over the fireworks.  We will be playing an arrangement of the 4thh movement, La Rejouissance

Shiny  Stockings

In an interview about Shiny Stockings, Frank Foster says “It embodies all the things that were important to him( Count Basie). It builds - it starts soft and ends with an explosion. It leaves space for the rhythm section to do whatever it’s going to do. It has that ensemble writing which the band can sink their teeth into and really make happen. … One more thing: it swings."

Rolling

Written in 1916, Rolling Thunder was dedicated to Ed Hicker, presumably a trombonist, since the march is subtitled "a trombone ace." Since its composition, Rolling Thunder has been used for diverse circus acts to generate excitement and on concert programs as a show-stopper. Please feel free to clap a long to this classic march!

Burning

Contrary to what it sounds like, this is not a piece about the Royal treasury going up in smoke.  This Is a pirate song!  The pirate, Black Bart, aka Bartholomew Roberts, named all of his flagships “the royal fortune

He was considered to be the most successful plunderer of the Carribean in the 1700s but eventually the royal navy did catch up to him and sink his ship.
