As Winds Dance | As Winds Dance is a joyful piece all about syncopation. There is a central rhythmic pattern repeated throughout the piece that cycles through all of the instruments. As you listen, think about the wind dancing through trees on a Sunny Spring day, with birds flying in and out of the branches, and you will have captured the essence of “As Winds Dance”

Anjin: The Blue Eyed Samurai | Anjin is all about the journey of a warrior: It opens with a beautiful, reverant theme (play theme), which transforms later on into a more heroic theme. In the middle of this warrior’s journey, our hero thinks wistfully of home and this is represented by the English folk song “The Water is Wide” (play theme). This folk song is all about longing for home. This cinematic piece features Ian on Flute, Iulia on Oboe, and Frank on the Euphonium.

Fireworks Music | The Fireworks suite was premeired by Handel on April 29, 1749, to to commemorate the end of the War of Austrian Succession. It was originally scored an ensemble of twenty-four oboes, twelve bassoons, contrabassoon, nine horns, nine trumpets, and timpani in order to be heard over the fireworks. Shiny Stockings | In an interview about Shiny Stockings, Frank Foster says “It embodies all the things that were important to him( Count Basie). It builds - it starts soft and ends with an explosion. It leaves space for the rhythm section to do whatever it’s going to do. It has that ensemble writing which the band can sink their teeth into and really make happen. … One more thing: it swings."

The horse drawn wagon inspired the opening grove, while the rhythm of the opening melody comes from the calls of people asking for the “watermelon man”. |
